The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William Krause (ASN: 1332), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 125th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cierges, France, 1 August 1918. The battalion to which he was attached, forced by vastly superior numbers to take up a more advantageous position, left 21 wounded men well in advance of their second position. Private Krause, together with Lieutenant Warde B. Smith, Medical Corps, and Sergeant John W. Doyle, medical detachment, under observation of the enemy and in the face of intense enemy mm-g fire carried the wounded men to a place of safety. The indomitable spirit and extreme devotion to his comrades inspired the men of his organization with renewed courage and determination.
