The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Henry Flint Chandler, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 17 June 1864, while serving with Company E, 59th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. Though seriously wounded in a bayonet charge and directed to go to the rear, Sergeant Chandler declined to do so, but remained with his regiment and helped to carry the breastworks.
