The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Edgar Stanton McKee, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Rimling, France, from 31 December 1944 through 3 January 1945. Throughout this period, Lieutenant Colonel McKee displayed outstanding leadership and personal bravery in directing the defense of his battalion. Without regard for enemy small arms and artillery fire, he moved among his men, organizing tactical moves. In spite of having had no sleep and little rest for three days and nights, he personally accompanied his troops in an attack on Brandelgingerhoff Farm. Everywhere enemy artillery fire was brought down on the command group, Lieutenant Colonel McKee remained at his post and continued to direct his battalion until wounded and evacuated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel McKee, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
