The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Clark E. McGee (ASN: 0-377204), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 82d Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1944, in France. In crossing the border, Captain McGee led his company some thirty-five miles through enemy territory to seize the armored division objective for the day. He was with the leading element of his company throughout the entire action. In returning to his company command post from checking his last patrol, Captain McGee was ambushed. Mortally wounded by a hand grenade, he fought off the attackers until he died from his wounds a few moments later. Captain McGee’s gallant leadership and determination is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
