The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. McDougall (ASN: 33177041), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 19 April 1945, at 1700 hours, Private First Class McDolugall and a comrade crawled forward 200 yards under intense enemy machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire to an enemy-held house in Nuremberg, Germany, to silence the positions therein. Pausing within twenty yards of the house, they hurled grenades into the windows and then charged with bayonets fixed, killing three enemy, wounding two, and capturing two, silencing the machine gun and allowing their company to advance to its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class McDougall, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
