Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 159 (June 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Sheldon E. McDonald (ASN: 31216471), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 25 February 1945 to 26 February 1945, in Germany. When three members of his platoon were wounded during an attack, Private First Class McDonald unhesitatingly advanced despite heavy fire and administered first aid. After heroically making his way under fire to an aid station to notify medical aid men of the location of the wounded, he returned to the injured men. Placing them in a sheltered position with four wounded from another unit, Private First Class McDonald tended his wounded comrades for a period of thirty-six hours under fire until evacuation could be effected. Private First Class McDonald’s gallant self-sacrifice saved the lives of his wounded comrades and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
