The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Chris McCullough (ASN: 0-450538), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 June 1944, in France. Captain McCullough was observing from friendly lines while members of an engineer unit crossed a river into enemy lines to probe for mines. The enemy opened fire, wounding the engineer officer and killing one of his men. Captain McCullough fearlessly left his position, proceeded across open ground and across a footbridge, both subjected to intense enemy machine gun fire, in order to evacuate his fallen comrades. He successfully evacuated the wounded officer and again entered enemy territory and returned the body of the mortally wounded soldier to friendly soil. This voluntary and courageous act, performed by Captain McCullough without through of the risk to his life, reflects the highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
