The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Edward L. McCullen (ASN: 0-1167976), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1944, in Germany. First Lieutenant McCullen, by establishing his observation post forward of the infantry, was able to immediately adjust artillery fire. Leaving his foxhole, First Lieutenant McCullen advanced in the face of the enemy to a knoll for better observation, although his knoll was under constant direct artillery and small arms fire. His heroic actions, courage, and devotion to duty, reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
