Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 106 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clarence F. McCord, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 30th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division in action against the enemy in Italy on 8 October 1943. When heavy enemy artillery fire landed in the area, killing eight and wounding more than a score, Staff Sergeant McCord voluntarily left a covered position and rushed to the aid of the injured, disregarding continuing shell fire, and moved several casualties to positions of safety, thus preventing their receiving additional wounds. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
