The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Max E. McConnell, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 94th Infantry Division, in Germany, during the period 19 February 1945 through 23 March 1945. Sergeant McConnell repeatedly distinguished himself by his courageous actions. On one occasion when friendly tanks were brought under intense artillery fire, braving heavy machine gun and small arms fire, he fearlessly dashed to the tanks, rendering first aid and evacuated the wounded to a position of comparative safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
