The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clifford McClain (ASN: 35687076), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944. Corporal McClain was assigned to duty as a lineman with a field artillery organization. During the course of an engagement with the enemy, when hostile artillery dropping in the area disrupted communications, Corporal McClain remained at his tasks until communications had been restored, so that information vitally necessary to the successful completion of tactical missions might be speedily transmitted. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal McClain, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
