The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Clifford J. McCarthy (ASN: 0-370387), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 83d Infantry Division, on 7 July 1944, near *****, France. Captain McCarthy, as Battalion S-3, was given the mission of guiding the tanks in a tank-infantry attack. Other means of communication having failed, Captain McCarthy proceeded forward from objective to objective, constantly exposing himself to the fire of snipers and entrenched enemy infantry. His utter disregard for his own safety, and his initiative and aggressiveness were an inspiration to the officers and men of his battalion. His inspired leadership was in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
