The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Jack G. McCanless (ASN: 39106960), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Private McCanless gallantly remained in a position to combat an overwhelming enemy attacking force and later moved through murderous fire to aid two comrades. When it became necessary for his platoon to withdraw, he remained in position firing steadily on the enemy and was one of the last men to withdraw. Private McCanless’ heroic actions were an invaluable contribution to the withdrawal and have gained him the admiration of his associates. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private McCanless, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
