The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Edward E. McBride, Jr. (ASN: 0-396114), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1944, in Germany. As Commander of an Infantry Company which had been given the mission of occupying a section of an enemy-held town, Captain McBride maneuvered his company in an attempt to penetrate enemy defenses. The hostile dispositions were so strongly entrenched with tanks and infantrymen that the endeavors of the company failed. Displaying great courage, Captain McBride fearlessly advanced alone to establish an observation post close to the enemy positions from which he directed artillery fire so effectively that the enemy tanks were either knocked out or forced to withdraw, enabling his company to capture their objective. The fortitude, bravery, and high degree of professional skill exhibited by Captain McBride resulted in the successful completion of an important mission of his company. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain McBride, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
