Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (May 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Allen D. Maxwell (ASN: 20149261), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 April 1945, in Germany. When an enemy ambush knocked out the lead vehicle of his platoon and another vehicle became mired, Sergeant Maxwell immediately brought up his armored car and placed effective fire on the enemy. He then dismounted and moved to the flank to organize defensive positions. Sergeant Maxwell displayed great heroism by standing up to draw machine gun fire so that the enemy position could be located. By observing the resulting fire, he was able to have neutralizing fire laid on the gun and then withdraw his men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Maxwell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
