Mathes, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 103d Infantry Division during World War II. Private Mathes crawled forward 50 yards and captured an enemy sniper. Ordering the enemy soldier to call his commanding officer, Private Mathes told the officer that his unit was surrounded and demanded their surrender. The officer gave the cease firing order and under Private Mathes’ directions assembled and surrendered his entire command of 74 men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
