The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Numa E. Martin, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 18 March 1944. When a patrol of 25 Germans attacked his Infantry platoon positions in Italy on the early morning of 18 March 1944, Private First Class Martin left his foxhole, crawled 50 yards forward and fired grenades point-blank at the attackers. Under enemy machine gun, machine pistol, and mortar fire which was covering the area, he fired 10 grenades into the Germans. After returning for more ammunition he crawled back and fired another eight grenades at the German patrol, inflicting several casualties and materially aiding in repulsing the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
