Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 75 (May 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jack Martin (ASN: 39279360), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 August 1944 in France. The tank destroyer of which Corporal Martin was gunner was in a defensive position when hit and set ablaze by enemy shell fire, killing one crewman and wounding the others severely. Although the ammunition in the vehicle was beginning to explode, Corporal Martin, disregarding his painful wounds helped the entire crew from the destroyer. Then, under intense enemy fire, he walked and crawled five hundred yards where he commandeered a quarter-ton truck, and procured litter bearers. Only when he had successfully evacuated the wounded men did he permit himself treatment and evacuation. The indomitable courage and profound devotion displayed by Corporal Martin in the behalf of his fellow soldiers reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
