The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant George E. Markland (ASN: 20456205), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 July 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Markland was assigned to duty with an infantry organization engaged in a sustained attack against the enemy. When the advance was held up by fire from a hostile dug-in position, Technical Sergeant Markland voluntarily crawled to a position in advance of the infantry forces in order that he might adjust artillery fire on the enemy strongpoint. For a considerable time, he consistently exposed himself to murderous enemy mortar and artillery fire, and the successful completion of his task was materially responsible for the overall success of the attack. The gallant devotion to duty and superior soldiership exhibited by the brave acts of Technical Sergeant Markland reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
