The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Cavalry) Henry Coddington Meyer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 17 June 1864, while serving with Company D, 24th New York Cavalry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. During an assault and in the face of a heavy fire Captain Meyer rendered heroic assistance to a wounded and helpless officer, thereby saving his life and in the performance of this gallant act sustained a severe wound.
