Manley, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 88th Infantry Division on the FIFTH Army front in Italy during World War II. Private Manley, member of a rifle company in the 88th Infantry Division, in the face of heavy machinegun fire single-handedly attacked an enemy machinegun nest. By his accurate rifle fire he inflicted an un-ascertained number of casualties and helped to take 16 Germans prisoner. Although wounded by a hostile hand grenade, Private Manley continued to fight vigorously until ordered to an aid station by his company commander. As a result of his action the battalion was able to take its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
