Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 160 (July 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George F. Malley (ASN: 0-1059869), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945 in Germany. In the course of its advance when the platoon commanded by Lieutenant Malley encountered a heavily mined area and heavy enemy small arms fire, it was necessary to withdraw and select a different route of advance. Noting that one of his men was lying helpless in the open field, Lieutenant Malley returned in an attempt to rescue the man. While moving forward he struck a trip wire of an enemy anti-personnel device and was seriously wounded by the resultant explosion. Notwithstanding his injury he continued to direct the withdrawal of his platoon before permitting himself to be evacuated for needed medical care. The courageous leadership and determined fidelity to duty exhibited by Lieutenant Malley reflect great credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
