The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Irving Malkin (ASN: 12183422), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, near *****, France. Technician Fifth Grade Malkin was serving as radio operator to the Battalion Commander. During a particularly heavy barrage they were pinned down in a crater where the radio would not function. When it became urgently necessary for the Battalion Commander to communicate with the companies, Technician Fifth Grade Malkin at once climbed to the top of the crater, stood erect with the radio strapped to his back and for a considerable period the time maintained this position in order to send the necessary orders. In doing so he was completely exposed to heavy artillery and small arms fire. His courageous action facilitated the rout of the enemy. The conspicuous heroism of this enlisted man reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
