The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Anthony J. Makoc (ASN: 32170869), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, near *****, France. When a platoon of his company was pinned down by heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire, Sergeant Makoc and another man crawled forward to a position where they could see about forty of the enemy. Sergeant Makoc exposed himself to the enemy and drew fire from an enemy officer commanding the position. This enabled his companion to arise and kill the officer with a well aimed shot. Seeing their commander killed the enemy soldiers surrendered forthwith. This daring action prevented many casualties and enabled the continuation of the attack. Sergeant Makoc’s outstanding bravery and initiative reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
