The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Hugh Mainord (ASN: 0-109066), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944, in France. During an advance, Lieutenant Colonel Mainord’s battalion was halted by a fierce enemy counterattack. An enemy artillery concentration was laid in the area, which resulted in disorganization and panic. Without consideration for his own safety, Lieutenant Colonel Mainord rallied his men to the fight and personally led groups of his troops to vital terrain features, in spite of intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. The personal bravery and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Mainord reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
