Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 23 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Walter H. Mager (ASN: 37026026), United States Army, for gallantry In action while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, in action in November 1942, in Tunisia. Private Mager’s battery was in a defensive position guarding a town against a suspected tank attack. The battery was attacked by a flight of eight JU-88 medium bombers. During this attack Private Mager was manning a .50 caliber machine gun. The bombers circled into the sun and proceeded to bomb and machine gun the area. Private Mager began firing at the planes as soon as they were in range and continued to fire even after the bombs began to fall. A large bomb fell near the machine gun position, fatally wounded Private Mager. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
