The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Francis O. Mackey (ASN: 39296405), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 July 1944, near ****, France. Three enemy tanks infiltrated through the outpost line of Private Mackey’s company and brought heavy fire to bear upon the troops. Private Mackey, assisted by another man, armed himself with a rocket launcher and, utterly disregarding his own safety, despite the intense enemy artillery and machine gun fire, crawled to within point-blank range of the tanks and demolished them by accurate fire. Private Mackey’s conspicuous bravery and resolute determination reflect great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
