The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Dental Corps) Thomas Anthony Machio (ASN: 0-490244), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with as a Dental Officer with the Medical Detachment, 54th Armoed Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against the enemy at Ilshofen, Germany, on 9 April 1945. Braving intense enemy aircraft strafing, Captain Machio, Dental Officer, was bravely attempting to administer to the wounded when he, himself, received mortal wounds. His supreme devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
