The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clifton Woodrow Luther (ASN: 37135699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 April 1945, in Germany. While passing through a town, the advance party of Private First Class Luther’s regiment was fired on by a group of enemy snipers. Private First Class Luther, aware of the dangers facing him, moved forward and succeeded in hitting one of the snipers. Still advancing in the open, he was hit in the chest and arm by machine gun fire but courageously continued fighting forward until killed by enemy fire. His heroic actions made it possible for others to pass through the area unharmed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Luther, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
