Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 106 (November 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Rex Lunsford (ASN: 34008650), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Lunsford was performing his duties as Platoon Sergeant with his company when it was suddenly subjected to a terrific concentration of enemy artillery. So intense was the concentration that it was impossible for the company to move the wounded with them to a safe area. After several medical aid men were hit while attempting to get back to the wounded, Technical Sergeant Lunsford, leading a squad of volunteers, braved the unabated enemy fire and succeeded in rescuing some of his wounded comrades. Because he knew the location of the remaining casualties Technical Sergeant Lunsford insisted on returning to the area with a new squad, and for two hours, while the heavy enemy artillery continued to fall, he courageously continued his work until the last casualty was evacuated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Lunsford, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
