The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Paul Luchynsky (ASN: 42127326), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 March 1945, in Germany. When his platoon was receiving heavy fire from enemy self-propelled guns, artillery, and mortars, Staff Sergeant Luchynsky observed a direct hit scored on a position occupied by one of his comrades and could see that he was partially buried. Leaving his sheltered position although shells continued to fall all around him, he reached the wounded man’s position and, using his entrenching tool, he succeeded in freezing the trapped man, who was badly wounded. Carrying him to a sheltered spot, Staff Sergeant Luchynsky then returned through the enemy fire to secure aid men and then led them back to his wounded comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Luchynsky, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
