The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edwin E. Lucas (ASN: 14138864), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1944, in France. Private Lucas was assigned to duty as medical aid man with an infantry organization. During a tactical operation when one of his comrades was grievously wounded, Private Lucas voluntarily went forward over open terrain in plain view of the enemy to administer first aid, only to find the wounded man had died. In carrying out this unselfish deed, Private Lucas was painfully wounded before reaching his objective, and again wounded during his return. The courage displayed by Private Lucas reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service.
