Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 108 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Herbert H. Longcrier (ASN: 38128319), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 23 April 1944 Sergeant Longcrier entered a booby-trapped enemy mine field in Italy in which four men had been killed and six wounded, and disarmed twelve Teller mines while under direct fire of enemy machine guns only 200 yards away. Although two assistants were available, he left them behind in a position of safety and crawled into the mine field alone in order to clear it so the newly captured ground could be organized for defense against enemy counter attacks. With machine gun bullets striking the ground all around him, he worked on his stomach for an hour and a half until his mission was accomplished. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
