The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Wayne A. Linville (ASN: 37254745), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July 1943. During the landing on *****, Corporal Linville and one other man left the LCS scout boat which they were aboard, in a canoe in which they proceeded to within one hundred yards of the beach, in the face of shore searchlights, and then swam in from there. Then, under fire from machine guns, they checked landmarks and signaled confirmation to the scout boat as to the position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Linville, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
