(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Colonel Joseph Clair Austin, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Colonel Austin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an F-105D Thunderchief Fighter Airplane of the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, SEVENTH Air Force, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy in 1967. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Austin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
