The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William B. Lindberg (ASN: 0-887459), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 3 October 1944 to 4 October 1944, in Germany. Second Lieutenant Lindberg was serving as a Field Artillery Forward Observer giving artillery support to an Infantry Regiment which was engaged in an assault on the Siegfried Line. During the attack on the enemy positions, Second Lieutenant Lindberg was wounded. Being in a position in advance of the assaulting troops and realizing that to attempt to send a relief party to him would be suicidal, and in view of the vital need for artillery fire, he unselfishly elected to remain at his post, although painfully wounded. From 1600 on 3 October 1944 until 0900 on 4 October 1944, this gallant officer remained at his post and despite his painful wounds skillfully directed hundreds of rounds of artillery fire on the enemy positions. His extreme devotion to duty was a contributing factor in the successful attack on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Lindberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
