Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 78 (October 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Bernard S. Leviton (ASN: 37268265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 July 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Leviton was serving as liaison noncommissioned officer with his tank battalion giving support to an infantry organization preparing to engaged in a large scale offensive against the enemy. During the engagements bombs dropped on the area, and one man was buried alive in his dugout. With complete disregard for his own safety, Technical Sergeant Leviton left his shelter while the bombs were still dropping close by and succeeded in digging out the stricken man. Although a total of twenty-three bombs fell within a hundred yard radius of his position, Technical Sergeant Leviton unhesitatingly completed his heroic errand of mercy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Leviton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
