Headquarters, 88th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 58 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Jules Levine, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy on 2 June 1944. Leading the advance of his company to seize the high ground commanding a highway junction, Staff Sergeant Levine was fired upon from enemy emplacements on the objective. Aggressively moving forward, in full view of the enemy and disregarding the artillery shells striking in front of him, he located the enemy emplacement. Unhesitatingly, in the fire of enemy machine pistols and rifles, this courageous scout ran forward alone in assault of the hostile position and when the enemy abandoned their emplacements in full flight for the woods, Sergeant Levine raced on and captured three of them, including an officer. His platoon moved in and completed the seizure of the objective. The unhesitating aggressiveness of Sergeant Levine and his heroic disregard of enemy fire at the risk of his life were the principal features in the success of the mission and were an inspiration to all the men who saw the deed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
