The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Letko (ASN: 33833898), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 August 1944, in France. Private First Class Letko steadfastly remained at his machine gun in the face of heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire, and by his accurate and intensive fire successfully repulsed several attempts by large forces of enemy infantry to seize his position.
