The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph Kanaley (ASN: 1272983), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 111th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 11 October 1918. Private Kanaley ran along a road that was being heavily shelled and secured a litter, returning with it over the same route, and assisted in carrying a wounded soldier to a first-aid station.
