Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 72 (October 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Norbert J. Lehnert (ASN: 35107120), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944. Sergeant Lehnert was serving with a field artillery organization, assigned the mission of laying and maintaining communication lines between his organization and an infantry assault force to which direct fire support was being given. The enemy launched a terrific counterattack, supported by heavy artillery and mortar fire. The enemy thrust was sustained for several hours, and the communications lines were destroyed many times. With heroic devotion to duty, and complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Lehnert and a companion faithfully performed maintenance duties and kept the lines open for transmittal of fire direction vitally necessary in the successful repulse of the counterattack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Lehnert, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant Norbert J. Lehnert (ASN: 35107120), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 October 1944, in Germany. Sergeant Lehnert, a liaison sergeant with a battalion liaison party was operating over an area under constant enemy fire when their radio was destroyed by a direct hit. Sergeant Lehnert volunteered to return for another and proceeded on his way over a route subjected to the heaviest fire ever experienced by his battalion and successfully returned with the new radio. Later, Sergeant Lehnert insisted on going over the same route again on another mission. On the return trip the vehicle in which he was riding was hit by another vehicle and Sergeant Lehnert was injured, but he persisted in completing his mission. The inspiring gallantry and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Lehnert are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Armed Forces.
