Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 88 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Clifford G. Lee (ASN: 37578718), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 January 1945 in France. Sergeant Lee, mortar section leader, was directing the fire of his section from a forward observation post in a barn, when an enemy attacking force of two infantry companies supported by tanks threatened his position. Despite great damage from the full force of enemy fire directed upon his position, he remained in position until incendiary fire set the barn ablaze. However, his accurate direction of fire on the enemy completely broke the enemy attack and its threat to friendly forces was contained. The great courage and tenacity of purpose displayed by Sergeant Lee reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
