The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Max Lebida (ASN: 0-1314370), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 50th Infantry Regiment, 6th Armored Division, in action in France on 5 August 1944. While leading a machinegun section of his platoon, which was under heavy fire, all members of the gun crew were wounded. Lieutenant Lebida manned the machinegun and conducted its fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded. His heroic tenacity and devotion to duty at the price of his life reflects the finest tradition of the United States Infantryman. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
