Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 131 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Dudley J. Lawrence (ASN: 31375035), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. During an advance toward an enemy town, the infantry battalion to which Private Lawrence’s liaison section was attached, received fire from an enemy tank. Allied aircraft were overhead and it was imperative that they be warned that friendly troops were attacking the town. In the face of the heavy tank fire, Private Lawrence and a comrade carried their radio to their liaison officer so that he could contact Division Headquarters to inform the planes of the situation, and to transmit fire commands to the artillery battalion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Lawrence, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
