The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George M. Lanser (ASN: 36841082), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 January 1945, in Belgium. While his tank was waiting for an order to move into an attack Private Lanser noticed three seriously wounded men lying helpless in the snow. Filling his pockets with first aid packets and chemical heating pads and carrying as many blankets as possible, he left the security of his tank and ran across fifty yards of shell-torn terrain to the wounded men. After bandaging their wounds, he made three hazardous trips to his tank to get additional medical supplies. Private Lanser remained with the wounded men, applying heat and keeping them warm in blankets, until medical aid came. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
