The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles D. Lamb (ASN: 38165386), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 744th Light Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 March 1945, in Germany. When his unit was subjected to harassing fire from enemy positions located on the reverse slope of a hill, Sergeant Lamb volunteered to employ his tank in an effort to neutralize them. Advancing under covering mortar fire and protected from enemy rocket launcher fire by two accompanying infantrymen, he drove onto the enemy positions from the flank and raked the trenches with machine gun fire from point-blank range, overcoming all resistance. Sergeant Lamb’s gallant actions were largely responsible for successfully neutralizing the enemy positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Lamb, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
