Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 18 (July 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Lawrence A. Laliberte (ASN: 0-1287019), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 83d Infantry Division, in action on 4 July 1944, near ****, France. Captain Laliberte discovered that the commanding officer and the second in command had both become casualties from the heavy fire to which the company had been subjected. Without hesitation he assumed temporary command of the company and began its reorganization unmindful of direct and intense machine gun and small arms fire although it was necessary for him to crawl to numerous small groups and lead them to a point of rendezvous. Through his initiative, daring and sterling leadership he succeeded so well in his work of reorganization that the company met and repulsed with heavy losses a stubborn and determined counter-attack that otherwise might have engulfed it, and continued on its mission. Captain Laliberte’s personal bravery and utter disregard for his own safety, his outstanding leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
