The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Stephen J. Labuda (ASN: 33255427), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1944, in France. Corporal Labuda was serving as a gunner with a field artillery battalion which was receiving heavy enemy artillery fire in its positions. When two of his comrades were seriously wounded, Corporal Labuda voluntarily left the shelter afforded by his foxhole and rushed to their side, administering first aid in a desperate effort to save their lives. In the performance of these unselfish services, Corporal Labuda was wounded. This voluntary deed, representing extreme loyalty to his fellow soldiers, served as an inspiration to the members of his battalion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Labuda, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
