The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Martin Joseph Kupchella, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 801st Tank Battalion, , 14th Armored Division, in action against the enemy near Homengen, Belgium, on 17 December 1944. On this date, Private First Class Kupchella volunteered to act as leader on a towed antitank gun at all times under enemy fire. Several times he ran across an open field under enemy observation to obtain more ammunition. When his platoon leader was wounded and the only transportation available to evacuate him was a bogged down jeep in the open field, Private First Class Kupchella once more ran into the field and working desperately, freed the vehicle and carried the lieutenant to safety. Private First Class Kupchella’s courage, initiative, and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Military Service.
