Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (December 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph W. Kubala (ASN: 33076594), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of *****, Italy, on ** November 1943. While the company to which he was attached was in a firing position in support of an infantry regiment, the enemy attacked the company with severe and continuous artillery concentration. Several members of the company were wounded and Corporal Kubala with utter disregard for his own safety, and under extremely heavy enemy fire, immediately left his place of comparative safety to render first aid to his wounded comrades. Despite the severity of the fire, Corporal Kubala rendered skillful first aid to the injured men, thereby materially assisting their ultimate recovery. The courage and skill displayed by Corporal Kubala was exemplary and a credit to the Armed Forces of the United States.
